Running a business is not easy, in fact, it is very risky. When you start up a business, your greatest concern and need is finding customers that need or want your product and/or services. In order for your business to succeed, you need to find customers. The questions then inevitably comes up, how do we find customers; or maybe the more important questions should be: How do we help customers find us?
Traditional advertising uses the method of sending your advertisement out via TV, Radio or Newspaper in the hopes that someone who needs your product or service will hear it and then remember to look for you. This has been very successful over the years. The issue now is that people can and in many cases do avoid traditional "outbound" marketing. They have Tivo or a DVR to fast forward through commercials, they use satellite radio or plug a IPod or MP3 player into their radio and the shift from printed news to getting your news online. So one might ask, what do I as a business owner do. I have a simple answer. You shift your way of thinking and marketing from outbound to inbound. With inbound marketing you take advantage of social media optimization and help customers find you.
Instead of blasting a ad out for millions of people who have no desire for your service you focus your marketing on people who are searching for your product or service. With this type of marketing the prospect is in search mode, this means they are interested in what you have to offer and that much closer to buying. You are not wasting marketing dollars on people who have no interest and because of this ROI is much higher with inbound marketing. Social media optimization takes advantage of the internet and the increasing number of social networking sites, which allows you to reach more prospects/customers.
Social media optimization is not only limited to advertising using social networking sites, but takes advantage of media sites like YouTube, PR and article sites, etc... So what are the benefits for your business by using this type of advertising technique?
a. The use of media sites like YouTube is a great way to promote events. Millions of people log in to YouTube to watch videos each day, in-fact YouTube is one of the top search engines used on the web today. If you are able to figure out a keyword that will help your video land on a top spot after a random search then you will surely reach more potential customers.
b. You can use Facebook to promote events and create a "fan" base. You can make a special album for your events and you can post pictures during and after the event. In this way, you do not only catch users attention but you get them curious as well. Who knows they might get curious enough come to your place and try it.
c. Twitter is great for feedbacks despite the limited number of characters. However, there is a lot of social communication and interaction taking place on twitter right now, this is because people are always watching for the next update or the next news flash.
By using these social networking and media sites it will be easier for you to circulate your news and reach more people. For a business to be successful, it is essential that you take advantage of anything that can promote your business and social media has the ability to reach thousands, even millions of people quickly and in a very cost effective way.
