Math Difficulties and Solutions

Parents are often at a loss when it comes to helping their child with math homework. When did this subject become so complicated? Math is certainly a lot different than it once was, and it involves more than the simple adding, dividing and multiplying that many parents are used to. So what do parents do when they are in this situation? The answer is actually pretty simple-they hire a math tutor.

Math tutors are able to help the student focus on problem areas that they aren’t able to grasp in the classroom. Individual attention is given that can often lead to a better understanding of the math homework or specific problem areas. Tutoring can enable the student to catch up with the rest of the class, and often times move ahead by providing a better understanding of the concepts being taught. Granted, math is not that interesting for many students, but it can be if they understand it.

A good math tutor should be able to not only teach concepts and solutions, but also make the subject interesting and challenging. College students are often available for tutoring and are an excellent choice for parents who are seeking help for their child. Many colleges maintain a list of students who are available to tutor in different subjects, and it is simply a matter of calling the college. These schools may also have websites where the tutors are registered and may be contacted this way, or perhaps recommendations could come from someone who has already used a particular tutor.

For some reason, students seem better able to understand and comprehend problems when being tutored. It may be that the tutor is right there to answer any questions he or she has no matter how long it takes to understand the problem. It could also be the fact that many students don’t function well in large classroom settings. The problem could be that math is complicated to begin with, and a lot of students feel intimidated and don’t want to appear “stupid” in front of their peers. Whatever the reason, hiring a math tutor often rectifies the problem.

Sometimes it may be recommended that a student receive help from the math teacher after class. If, after a period of time, the grades don’t show improvement it may be time to consider hiring a math tutor to assist with homework. Most students show immense improvement after tutoring sessions of two or three times a week and it well worth the expense when the grades improve along with the confidence of the child.

Good suggestions! Hopefully, I'll be able to help my child with math homework, but who knows where it will be in the next decade?
